The Importance of School Psychology.

When young people get support where they learn, grow, and connect each day, meaningful change can happen sooner and last longer.

School-based psychologists and provisional psychologists play a vital role in strengthening both student wellbeing and learning outcomes. At the same time, we deeply value the essential work of all clinicians working with families, and the many different ways children and young people are supported across our broader mental health system.

Every part of the system matters, and together, we create stronger pathways of care for children and young people.

The benefits of psychological support in schools.

  • Early & accessible support
In a place where young people spend much of their time, in school, allowing concerns to be addressed early, before they escalate.

  • Keep students connected to learning
By reducing time away from class for external counselling appointments.

  • Reduce pressure for families
By removing the need to travel across town for appointments, support can be accessed on-site.

  • Strengthen parent and school connection
By offering a familiar and accessible setting for communication and enabling a shared and collaborative approach between school and home.

  • Connect students to the right support
By making informed and timely referrals to services outside of school, to help get the right support.

  • Provide wrap-around support
By drawing a care team together to provide coordinated, consistent and strengths-based support to students.

  • Build whole-school capacity
By consulting with staff, shaping wellbeing initiatives, and supporting teachers to respond confidently to diverse and complex student needs.

A heartfelt thank you to all school-based clinicians who support children, families, and school communities every day. Your work plays a vital role in shaping young people’s wellbeing and mental health today and in the future.
